I've liked Elvis for a while now, but I never heard that quote before. It's awesome, though :) I can get that feeling every time I try to write a CD review...

Here's the only other quote about music journalism I've run across:

"Most rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, for people who can't read. "

-- Frank Zappa

This quote helps me keep things in perspective :)

At this point, nobody is going to be swayed to buy or not buy the album based on a few songs posted online (that were removed later, I might add).

I would submit that nine songs are more than just a few, and even if they were removed later, who knows how many downloads were done in that time...

Using the internet is a large part of music marketing these days

That's true, but usually the band has a little more control over certain aspects of the process, such as when their unreleased material gets put online...

Did Cogill break the law? I guess.

No guesswork here; the answer is yes. It may not seem like a big deal, but a law was indeed broken...

Most bands make the majority of their money touring, endorsements and in song licensing and placement, NOT on album sales.

Even if that's true, that would have only been the case in the last few years. Prior to that time, there were many artists who never toured so most of their money was made from album sales and airplay. For example, Kate Bush has only ever toured once because she suffers from stage fright, so every free download of her material would indeed cut into her income...

But I get what you're saying about Axl taking too freaking long to release this album. At this point, though, he might be better off never releasing it, as I can't imagine it could ever live up to people's expectations for it...

Unfortunately there seemed to be a major problem with the sound in the stadium which transmitted itself to the broadcast, unlike the Chinese performances which were all pre-recorded and mimed.

Overall it fitted in with virtually every other 8 minute handover segment we've ever seen - part dance, part music, part sport, part iconic landmarks.

Nice closing line to this post! I feel like I've heard it somewhere before. :)

I thought it was Frank Zappa who coined that phrase. Hmmm. Could have been Costello. I guess it doesn't really matter. The point is, writing about music is a lot more like writing songs than Costello/Zappa would like to admit. In both instances, writers are trying to capture something ineffable. To me, that isn't a waste of time at all. Life to me is all about trying to express the inexpressible. And a lot of the time, some great happy accidents come out of the process, where you thought you were headed in one direction and end up somewhere entirely unexpected.

Cheers!
